SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP)
The Concept of the Cloud
Initially, "cloud" was a metaphor for the complex telephone networks connected via the internet. Today, it refers to a model where servers, networks, storage, development tools, and even applications are available through the internet.
Benefits of Cloud Computing
Cloud computing allows organizations to avoid large upfront investments in equipment, training, and ongoing maintenance. These needs are handled by a cloud service provider.
Key Characteristics of Cloud Services
According to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), cloud computing has five key characteristics:
- Internet Access: Users can connect to data and applications via the internet anytime and anywhere.
- Measured Service: Typically "pay-as-you-go," users pay only for what they use.
- On-Demand Self-Service: Services can be quickly requested and provided without manual setup.
- Resource Sharing: Using a multi-tenant model, a single application is shared among multiple users.
- Rapid Elasticity: Resources can be quickly scaled up or down based on demand.
Business Benefits of Cloud Services
Cloud computing offers several benefits:
- Cost Efficiency: Reduces initial setup costs for servers, databases, and networks. It also minimizes maintenance costs and the need for a large IT staff.
- Flexibility: Resources can be scaled up or down based on demand.
- Reliability: Most providers offer 99.99% uptime with redundancy and fault-tolerant mechanisms.
- Security: High-end security features are available even to small businesses.
Categories of Cloud Services
- Software as a Service (SaaS): Applications are hosted by a third party and accessed via the internet, reducing the need for software downloads or updates. Examples include Gmail, Dropbox, and SAP SuccessFactors.
- Platform as a Service (PaaS): Provides a computing platform allowing the use of various development tools and environments without managing the underlying infrastructure.
- Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS): Provides virtualized computing resources such as storage and servers on-demand, enabling scalability and innovation.
SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP)
Previously known as SAP HANA Cloud Platform, SAP Cloud Platform evolved to encompass a wide range of services, leading to its rebranding as SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP).
Benefits of SAP BTP
- Integration: Seamless integration with SAP and non-SAP systems.
- Innovation: Supports IoT, Machine Learning, AI, and Big Data.
- Flexibility: Compatible with multiple cloud infrastructure providers.
Core Components of SAP BTP
SAP BTP includes tools and services for data management, analytics, AI, IoT, blockchain, and application development and integration, enhancing business processes and enabling the creation of new applications.
SAP API Business Hub
Enables the development of secure, scalable applications and facilitates communication between different applications by consuming APIs available at api.sap.com.
Security Between On-Premise Systems and the Cloud
SAP Cloud Connector secures HTTP connections between on-premise systems and SAP BTP, ensuring secure integration without exposing internal systems to the internet.
Development Environments in SAP BTP
- Cloud Foundry Environment: An open-source technology supporting various IaaS providers like AWS and Azure, multiple runtimes, programming languages, and services.
- Neo Environment: Based on SAP's proprietary technology, supporting HTML5, Java, and SAP HANA applications with a fixed set of runtimes and programming languages.
- ABAP Environment: Allows development of ABAP-based extensions and new applications for SAP S/4HANA Cloud.
- Kyma Environment: A managed Kubernetes runtime that enables the extension of SAP solutions with serverless functions and microservices.
Transition from Neo to Cloud Foundry
SAP is shifting its focus to Cloud Foundry, discontinuing Neo trial accounts from November 13, 2020, and encouraging migration to Cloud Foundry.
Comparison of Neo and Cloud Foundry
- Neo: Limited to SAP as the IaaS provider, supporting a fixed set of technologies.
- Cloud Foundry: Supports multiple IaaS providers, offering flexibility and scalability.
SAP's strategic decision focuses on enhancing services like SAP Analytics Cloud within the Cloud Foundry environment.
